Surface Creek Vintage Gravel Race

When: July 3, 9 am

Where: Meet at the Grand Mesa Visitor's Center at US Hwy 65 and Forest Route 121. Stage One begins here heading east on Forest Route 121. There are a few miles of cross-country riding before arriving at Forest Route 125 where we make our descent. Stage One ends at the coral. The Finish line is the cattle guard. Take a rest and make sure everyone survived before proceeding to Stage Two, which is down Surface Creek Road all the way down to East Main Street in Cedaredge and then to the bike shop! Stage one is the race; stage two is a fun ride.  

Description:  Begin paved, then gravel rolling hills for a few miles, then a modest descent of 1500 ft in a few miles to the parking lot/coral. The finish line is the cattle guard. Stage two is gravel, then paved, ALL downhill!

Equipment Restrictions:rigid-framed bikes older than 1986 only – modern wheel mods allowed. Integrated shifters start with penalty: BYOB or use one of our Certified, Race-Ready bikes (First come First served on in-house bikes, limited loaner supply available). Penalty for post-1986 bike and/or suspension bikes. 

Safety Equipment Requirements: Bike Helmet (certified mountain bike helmet recommended) and thick gloves highly recommended.

Course Conditions: Moderate Climbing for the first 5 miles, relatively flat, until Surface Creek Road with fast descents and sweeping curves, lots of washboards, large bumps (some will launch your bike into the air), and rocks. Equipment Advantages:   Original drop bars and brakes - +0:10 seconds Integrated or updated shifters - -0:30 seconds Age restrictions: none Age Groups: Except for riders under 12 years, there are separate categories for boys/girls, men, and women.

Old enough to ride through 12 years 13 years - 19 years

        20 years – 35 years

        36 years – 49 years

        50 years and older

Prizes: The winner of each category wins a jackpot based on the number of participants; the more the merrier!
